finishing dining room table top
#1
I would like to put a clear protective coat of "something" on my 3" thick pine dining room table top. Preferably, I am looking for a plastic-like table top finish so that a glass of ice water will not leave a mark for example. Any suggestions on what product to buy or how to do the job and what to use? I have seen some nice finishes on wooden bars in barrooms. That is the type results I am looking for. Any suggestions?

The finish you're describing can be obained with a product called Rock Hard Varnish - it was originally designed for bar tops. It's not cheap, but it an excellent product. It's available from the site(s) below.
If you decide to use it, be sure to buy the reducer also. Standard paint thinners don't work well.

My apologies. I was a little hasty in wording my reply. Go to the Vandykes site and ask for their free catalog. Rockhard varnish (and the reducer) are in it.
If you're in more of a hurry than that, the item number for to varnish (quart) is AH-02238478 (13.99); a pint is AH-02238449 (8.99) The reducer is (quart only) AH-02238507, it costs 6.89. All prices plus shipping and handling, of course.
You can call them toll free 24 hours a day at 1-800-558-1234.
If you're into refinishing at all, order the catalog (it's free).
