Thanks for the advice on preparing polished pine bunks for painting. I have (finally) sanded them back and am ready to start painting. How can I achieve a sponged finish?

finishing dining room table top

I would like to put a clear protective coat of "something" on my 3" thick pine dining room table top. Preferably, I am looking for a plastic-like table top finish so that a glass of ice water will not leave a mark for example. Any suggestions on what product to buy or how to do the job and what to use? I have seen some nice finishes on wooden bars in barrooms. That is the type results I am looking for. Any suggestions?

Stripping rust/iron table

I have a small iron table, badly rusted, that I plan to refinish. It is a frame sort of thing, with skinny legs and a rectangular frame on top (there is no top currently; I plan to create a mosaic top for this table). What is the easiest way to remove the rust? (I'd love to find a chemical product that would do it.) Do I need to use a primer before spray painting the table, after removing the rust? Any other tips welcome. Thanks!
