black stains on cherry veneer table top

I have just stripped down a cherry veneer table top and have found that there are some black stains. I am not sure if they are burns or not. How do I remove these? Also on the corner of the table there is a chunk of veneer missing 1"x1" do you know how to repair this also? Thank-you very much for your time!!

If they are burn marks you'll probably be able to feel a difference in the textureof those areas as opposed to the wood around it.
