Back of china cabinet

I damaged the back of a china cabinet transporting it to my house. It is 1/8 in. x 2ft. x 4ft., can a wallpaper sample be used over tempered hardboard as a replacement? Or are there different materials and methods to repair it? Looking for suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I think I'd put a new piece of tempered hardboard on.

If the back is visible from the front of the cabinet I would probable opt for plywood. Plywood is available in furniture grade for cabinet backing. The quality of the plywood might depend on the quality of the cabinet.
