Question

I AM REFINISHING A LARGE AMOIRE THAT IS STAINED AND LACQUERED RED AND BLUE. AFTER TESTING A DRAWER AND SHELF BY STRIPPING WITH CHEMICAL THE WOOD IS STILL TINTED BOTH COLORS AND DO NOT WANT TO GO INTO BLEACHING THE WHOLE PIECE. I HAVE NOW DECIDED THAT I WILL PAINT THE PIECE BUT WOULD LIKE AN OPINION AS TO WHETHER IT IS BEST TO SAND, PRIME AND THEN PAINT OVER THE EXISTING FINISH OR IF IT IS BETTER TO CHEMICALLY STRIP THE REST OF THE PIECE AND THEN PAINT IT. I AM HOPING IT IS NOT THE LATTER. ALSO WHEN SANDING WHAT GRADE SHOULD BE USED AND IS THERE MORE THAN ONE KIND OF PRIMER?

If indeed it is a lacquer finish, first try to wipe more of the color off by rubbing with lacquer thinner. A lacquer will dissolve in the solvents in which it is made.
