plan for wooden mantlepiece

Hi guys...and ladies (i'm sure there's some lady woodworkers around aswell) I am looking for ideas or plans or pictures for making my own wooden mantlepiece. I searched the web and was totally amazed that i could not find ANY whatsoever.

REFINISHING WOOD ARMOIRE

I AM REFINISHING A LARGE AMOIRE THAT IS STAINED AND LACQUERED RED AND BLUE. AFTER TESTING A DRAWER AND SHELF BY STRIPPING WITH CHEMICAL THE WOOD IS STILL TINTED BOTH COLORS AND DO NOT WANT TO GO INTO BLEACHING THE WHOLE PIECE. I HAVE NOW DECIDED THAT I WILL PAINT THE PIECE BUT WOULD LIKE AN OPINION AS TO WHETHER IT IS BEST TO SAND, PRIME AND THEN PAINT OVER THE EXISTING FINISH OR IF IT IS BETTER TO CHEMICALLY STRIP THE REST OF THE PIECE AND THEN PAINT IT. I AM HOPING IT IS NOT THE LATTER. ALSO WHEN SANDING WHAT GRADE SHOULD BE USED AND IS THERE MORE THAN ONE KIND OF PRIMER?Read More

Antique Oil Finish

I finally finished refinishing my cedar chest. It came out excellent except for one thing. The finish on the lid isn't even. When the light hits it you can see uneven-ness of the Antique Oil Finish that I used. (The lid doesn't look like one piece of wood, dull in areas and shiny in others) My question is this: Can I use very fine steel wool to blend it all in or is this not the way to do it? Your advice has always been helpful George. The directions did not say anything about sanding in-between coats and I used 3 coats. Rick Read More
