sorry I wasn't more informative.. the piece I am thinking about looks to be fiftish styl.. white/blond in color.. would like to strip it back to a golden oak finish...how can I tell if it is a veneer.. it doesn't looks like it.. is there any way other than stripping it .. what kind of stripper, solvent or water based would be best to start with.. thanks

Any good varnish/paint remover will do teh job of cleaning the piece up - along with your efforts, of course.
Veneer isn't always easy to spot but you can bet it's there. Solid wood furniture is just too expensive to make.
The best way to tell would be looking at the back of the piece. Look along the edge of the back (where the side panels run to the back). You may be able to disssscern a thin line that indicates veneer on the side.
Whether you can find these indications or not, I'd bet good money the piece is veneered.
