cedar chests
#1
I received an old cedar chest. It is fine on the inside. The outside had molded a little (wiped off)it has a few scratches on it and what appears to be white paint in spots like it bumped up against something. How do I take care of it or try to buff or shine it up. I know very little about furniture re-finishing. Can you help me?

There are two products that come to mind for removing the paint - 'Oops' and 'Goof-Off'. Both will remove dried latex paint without harming the finish. If the paint is oil, is can be removed, but the process is a little more tedious.
What I use is a single edge razor blade held almost flat against the surface and carefully scrape away the paint.
If the finish is in pretty good shape, a good rub down with an automotive abrasive compound such as Turtle Wax Polihsing Compound and Scratch Remover will restore the piece to a very respectable condition. Just follow the directions on the can.
