musty smell
#1
I was given an old piece of furniture that was stored down in a basement. I'm not sure if it was actually where water could get to it but it has a terrible musty smell I don't know how to get rid of. Any suggestions???????

If it's upholstered there's little you can do except have it redone. If it's not, there's a cure.
First, wipe the piece down, inside, outside, everywhere, with a water/bleach solution. I said wipe - don't wash. You don't want to hur the finish.
After this has been done, put a wash coat of shellac on every bit of bare wood - inside the drawers, inside the frame - everywhere. (A 'wash' coat is shellac thinned 3:1 with denatured alcohol - 3 parts alcohol to 1 part shellac.) This will seal whatever odors remain IN the wood, where you can't smell them.
