refinishing

we would like to clean-up/ possibly refinish furniture from the old "this end up" store. can you tell me the best way to approach this project. nothing has been done to living room set since purchased 20 years ago. thanks for the help.

The first step in refinishing (in my shop, at least) is cleaning the piece thoroughly. For that, I use Naphtha. It cuts grease, oil, dirt and wax without harming the finish. It is highly flammable, however, so use with care.
If, after a thorough cleaning, you decide you want to try to refinish a piece, go to your local library and check out several books on furniture refinishing. Try to avoid the ones that need a $500,000.00 shop to work in. Good refinishing (even great) can be done in half the space of a once car garage.
