Question refinishing laminate bookcases

I have two bookcases with a black laminate finish. I am interested in removing the black paint and finishing with a natural wood color. Any information you could provide would be appreciated.

lgonzales,
The laminate may be more than just black paint, it may be a melamine coating which will be nearly impossible to remove.
And you will need to know if there is actually wood under the laminate. If it is particle or pressed board you are probably wasting your time - not worth working on. An alternative may be to just paint it a lighter color. Can you tell from the backside if it is actual wood?

You were correct regarding the particle board. It seems to be some sort of "simulated" wood grain on top of the particle board. If I were to paint it a lighter color, which I would like to do, would I need to lightly sand the finish in order for the paint to adhere properly?

Refinishing laminate

Follow manufacturer's surface prep recommendations for your paint selection. Select a recommended paint at your local paint or home center.
