To wax or not to wax?
#1

I am refinishing a dining room set (table, chairs, hutch and buffet), the finish is Varathane semi gloss, now my question is should I wax it or not.
Any suggestions will be very appreciated.

In spite of the work involved in applying a good wax coating, there are advantages to consider.
Waxing adds a gentle satin sheen to most pieces and enhances their appearance. The biggest plus, however, is cleaning maintenance.
Waxed pieces are easier to keep clean - just a light dusting with Endust (Pledge will break down the wax and make re-waxing necessary more often)on a duster or cloth and there goes the dust . Wax, being a slick surface, doesn't give dust anything to hold to - hence it's much easier to clean.
If you're asking whether the wax finish is worth it for added proteciton the answer is definitely NOT - Wax offers little or no protection to wood.
Since your piece is finished in Varathane (a very durable finish), all you need consider is whether it's worth the initial effort from a maintenance standpoint..
