painting a stained table

I bought an inexpensive pine farm table to use as a home desk. It has a light coat of stain on it and a finish. I want to paint it white for a shabby chic look -- and wipe off some of the paint to show the wood for the chippy look. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to do this? Thanks! sue

Susan:

You can do it just like you described it - with one addition. Lightly sand the entire piece to allow the paint something to hang on to.

I'd use a semi-gloss rather than a flat paint.

George: Thank you for the great advice -- just one more question. Do I have to strip the stain and varnish off before I paint it, or just sand it and then wipe off paint for the aged look?? Thank you - I appreciate your assistance! Susan

Susan:

Stripping isn't necessary, but a good sanding is.
