Exclamation Use Dark Floor Stain without Full Stripping?

My hardwood floors are in good condition; they were stained with an oak finish maybe 15-20 years ago. I want darker floors (mahogany or ebony) and I'm wondering if there's any way I can stain them darker without sanding off all the existing stain.

Is there any way I can just give the planks a light sanding to gives them some "teeth" for holding the stain, and then "paint" a dark stain over top, followed with a few coats of sealer? Or do I have to take the floors right down to bare wood and start all over again?

For a stained look, you've got to get to bare wood. You can, however, paint the floors by just sanding them and painting.
