Mineral spirits will remove dirt, oil, grease, & wax from furniture and will not harm the finish. It can be applied with a rag, but on most pieces I usually use either 00 steel wool or a plastic mesh scrubby like you'd use for dishes.

Mineral spirits will NOT harm (much less remove) any cured finish).

The downside (and the reason I don't use paint thinner (mineral spirits) is it leaves a residue of its own. I use VM&P naphtha - available at any good paint store. It's cleaner, works faster, and leaves no residue. It is highly flammable, however, so take appropriate precautions.
