Refinishing baby crib

Refinishing baby crib
I am wanting to redo a baby crib I received from a friend. I don't know if I should strip it then paint it then a poly finish. My main concern is safety and any health risks to my baby once she is standing and probably chewing on the finished crib. Is there any advise on whether to strip and/or paint and have a poly top coat?

Stripping is not necessary. Sand, prime, paint. Use a quality exterior enamel for the final coat.
Today's paints don't have the lead hazard they used to, and they're tough enough to stand up to a lot of abuse. Use either a gloss or semi gloss (they're more durable).
Top Coating with poly is self defeating, as poly doesn't adhere well to other finishes.
