Refinish 100yr old Rabone folding yardstick

I have an old Rabone folding yardstick # 1190 made in England that was my great grandfathers.
it can be seen at:
http://www.globalantiquetools.com/rules/A277.htm
I want to safely refinish it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I want to give it to my oldest son as a gift when I refinish it.
What would be the safest way to remove the old discoloration particularly or the exposed sides.
I have included my icq # to immediately reply and have paltalk to talk in voice.
Thanks in advance!
Matt

Matt,
I've got a similar rule.
My suggestion is don't touch it - leave it as is.
