garage door rough framing

I'm ready to install my garage door. At the moment the opening is 2" bigger then the actual door. What size should the opening be in relation to the size of the door?

I need to put a frame of a least 4" around the opening. Is a 2 x 6 to thick for that purpose?

Tx for any input.

the opening should be the same as the door. so if your door is 8x7, the opening should be 8x7.

if the door is too wide, id put a 1x4 on each side, then add stop over that. the top of the opening can be brought down in the same way.

good luck

Your finished opening should be exactly the same as the door size.

garage door rough framing sub question

Thanks, I will frame my opening to make sur it is 8' x 7'.

I have another question:

Do I install a frame on the inside where the rail are going to attach or are the rail attaching to the studs+kingstud on each side of the opening.

If I install a frame, what tickness should that frame be?

If the garage will not be finished out, the track can be bolted to the double studs. If you plan to finish it out then put a 1x4 up for a trim board.

Thanks, the garage will be finish (firecode gypsum board).

I will put a 1 x 4 around the door inside of the garage but won't that position the door inside the garage by 5/8"?

Yes it will, and that will only position the door further in on the framing. I assume the jamb is to be painted. If the jamb will be wrapped with aluminum coil stock then forget the 1x4 and run the rock across the studs, wrap the jamb, install the track and you're done.
