Question

I am planning on putting a hip roof on a 22' x 22' garage.
I am also looking at constructing my own trusses and would like to know if 2x4 lumber would be sufficient? Also, what type of bracing is necessary for support underneath the common and jack rafters? Thank-you.

Why would you want to build your own trusses, unless you happen to be a truss engineer (in which case you wouldn't be asking these questions!). Depending on your locality, trusses that aren't engineered aren't even legal to use. Submit you plans for the garage to a truss company and have them built. When you are ready for them, they will deliver and place them on your walls. You'll be sheathing in a couple of hours, and will be time and money ahead.
