I have a wooden two car garage door with what appears to be an opener from a garage sale(thus the $ on masking tape). I wood like to install a sensor for toddler safety. Can they be installed separate from the original garage door opener?

I just bought a new house. It came with a garage, but the no garage door. I want to add a door. Problem: The door entrance is very low -- maybe 6'3''. So, I am thinking that adding a new roll garage door would take it even lower and then I would have to bend down everytime I go in. So I wanted to add swing doors. Kind of like bar doors :-) First, do you think this is a good idea? Second, what wood would I use? I was going to build the doors myself. Lastley, I would like to eventually add an electric door opener. I thought I could build something that would take a regular door opener and open these swing doors. Any comments would be appreciated.
