Hello, I am curently framing a 24 x 26 garage
and will be putting up trusses next week. My question is about the gable end overhand. I am planning on 1 foot, I know I have to account for my sub facia and drip edge but how do I get the correct length for the lookouts? I am going to use Alum soffit and facia,2x6 sub facia. Any detail would be great.
Thanks in advance.

Everyone does it a little different, but the way most pro do it is to just let the lookouts run wild. In other words, if your lookout or gable is going to be one foot, your lookout will have to be 1 foot pluse the distance back to your second truss, so lets just say that would be a total of 36".
cut your lookouts 40", install them, and then run a chalk line up the lookouts, cut them off, and you will have them all the same length, and nice and straight. You will just nail your fasica board to the ends of the lookouts, and cover with the metal fascia covering.

Don't worry about the lookouts until all the trusses are set. After that you'll know how long to make them.

Thumbs up

Thank you both for your replies, I was able to set the two end trusses and brace them today. I think understand what needs to be done on the overhangs. Will I have to trim the tails and cut the lookout 1.5 inches short to allow the 2x6 sub facia? Thanks again, Larry

Larry:
A 2x6 is pretty heavy for sub fasica. I would use a 1x6. I would also just nail the sub fascia to the end of the lookouts. If you are doing what I think you are doing, you are doing it backwards, of the way we do it. Instead of putting the fascia up, and worrying about the cutoffs, We sheet it first and cut to length. but it seems like your trying to get the correct length of sheeting. So think about this. From the edge of your end truss, add 12", plus 3.4" (sub fascia) plus the thickness of your fascia. This is how long your sheeting must hang over. The problem will be, that your trusses will not be exact, and the 2nd or 3rd truss is going to trip you up. Good Luck
