another garage door question

a torsion spring garage door jammed when i tried to close it. the cable seemed to have jumped the pulley. i tried to open and realign the cable. then when trying to close the door again, it jammed and the cable snapped. i know dealing with the torsion spring is dangerous and not a diy project. what about just replacing the lift cable?

Without knowing exactly which set up you have, it would be wise for you to have a pro do it. It is not expensive nor will it take them very long. The reason being is that on many systems, when you release the tension on the cable spool, your spring will unwind in about 1.5 seconds. Another reason for a pro, is that there is some reason this happened to your door. A pro will find out why. In other words, you cable cabe off and your door jambed because of something else. Good Luck

good point about the underlying problem. i was hoping that i could simply string up a new cable from the pulley to the bottom of the door. it sounds like that is not possible. i have read that the tension on the spring needs to be released first. not a project i want to take on. thanks for your input.
