Garage door opener was smoking....

now it is not working. I installed a used Automatic Doorman model 455 at a friends house. The opener worked great a few times, then started smoking at then end of each open or lower run. Now it won't work at all. There is a large canister thing that looks like a capacitor and is rated at 240v. There is a transformer that ups the 120 to 240. I suspect that the capacitor is for extra oomph when the opener starts. The smoke was coming from this capacitor. Now, when the remote is pressed the motor hums, but won't move unless you help the door up or give the drive belt a yank. The capacitor no longer smokes.......

...It this opener a throw away? Can I replace the capacitor? Any insights would really be appreciated. Thanks,

bob
