Question Garage Door Opener Motor

I have a garage door opener that is appx 20 years old. When opening the door, the chain remains taut through the movement and the motor shuts off at the correct point. However, when closing, the chain develops an inch or so of play which remains when the door reaches the floor. The result is that the motor does not shut off. The pulley and belt stop but the drive shaft from the motor continues to spin and will burn the v-belt if not shut off. I still have the owners manual but nothing in it addresses this problem. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Paul:
It would help if we knew what the Make and Model of your GDO is. It may be just a bad contact.
