High Garage Ceiling...garage door opener??

My new house has tall ceilings in the garage, about 12-14 feet high.

Wondering if anyone else has had an experience installing a garage door opener (actually 2!!) in this situation.

thanks!

We run into this all the time in maintenance garages we design. You basically have 2 options:

1. (the cheapest) Use conventional track and opener so the door, in the up position, is at the standard height, about 8' above the floor for a 7' door. You just hang and brace the track and opener in the conventional manner; just further down from the ceiling.

2. (the option we usually use to get more headroom under the door for vehicle maintenance) The tracks run vertically almost the ceiling, then turn horizontal just under the ceiling. The operator is attached on the sidewall beside the door to the shaft with the torsion spring; it's called a jackshaft operator. One of the things you have to watch out for is that there is enough height above the door opening and where the door turns horizontal; this option depends on the weight of the door to keep the cables from wanting to unwind when the opener turns the shaft to go down (although there are some things you can do to help this).

If you go with the jackshaft operator, I would suggest contacting a company that specializes in garage doors and is familiar with this type of door operator. Hope this helps.
