Replacing garage door wall button

Replacing garage door wall button
I have two wired garage door wall buttons which I want to replace with more attractive doorbell-type buttons. I removed the old button and wired the new doorbell to it, but it won't work, no matter which terminal I connect the red and white wires to. The door opens fine when I touch the two wires together. I bought a lighted wired doorbell switch, would that make a difference? It says not to be used with systems more than 16 volts.
Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, the problem is the lighted doorbell. I did the same thing you are doing and ended up solving the problem by disconnecting the light in the doorbell. Don't remember how I disconnected it any more, but that was the secret.
