Garage door opener not closing

I installed a Sears MN 139.53989 Garage Door Opener in August of 2003. When my wife came home last night he door would not close, had to manually close the door. When the button is pressed to close the door the lights flash, this signals the the door sensors are not lighned up correctly. I lighned up the sensors per the manual and tried to clse the door again, door went down about 5" and then went back up.

Questions:
Does anyone have any tricks for aligning these safety sensors? Does anyone know how to bypass these sensors?

on my big door i measured from the floor up to the first clip and did it on the other the same way.after i made sure they were working took a black marker and put a line on the track,so if they get moved just put it back to the line.as far as bypassing them i dont know how but i dont think its good if you have kids or pets because it would come down on them or your car and then insurence would check that first.
