re-siding garage

My garage is a one-car garage built quite some time ago. We believe it has asphalt type siding, not asbestos. It is flexible, about 1/4" thick and looks like large shingles. I am having vinyl siding, narrow type, put on in a couple of weeks and am wondering if I should remove the old siding. The sheets are about 1' long and overlap much like shingles, only further apart. The shinglers said it's "up to you" if you want to remove them or leave them on. They will not advise me. Shall I take it back to the wood or leave them on and let them put the vinyl over it?

Thank you for your hlep.

Garage Siding

Yes, it is up to you. I also agree however, and would have them or you remove the old siding. The main reason other then seeing your wall boards is that with vinyl siding it is best if it is put on a flat surface. That way it will hang well. Many times when putting vinyl siding over old siding a year or so down the road you could get a rolling look in your siding. It is still your choice. Good Luck
