Garage options

We have a chance to expand or replace our current garage. I wanted to know if purchasing a metal garage would hurt or help our property value compared with your basic wood one. Also, has anyone had any experience with constructing and using a metal garage? It appears the metal ones would last longer and offer more options...

Thank you

A lot depends on what the standard is in your area and what you are trying to accomplish. Around here (NE) metal garages are usually "working" garages. More of an outbuilding than an adjunct to a home. Personally, I would opt for a conventionally framed wood garage. IMO the metal buildings I've seen look too utilitarian.
As for durability, there are a lot of wood framed garages that have been around a long time. There is no reason why a well built garage shouldn't last as long as a house.
I haven't owned a metal building but I imagine they would require less maintenance. A farmer in our area put up a large metal garage to store his equipment. I think it only took a week or so start to finish.

Go with a wood garage. Metal garages have a way of looking cheap. Thats because they are cheap. It is tough to change the appearance of a metal building if you don't like the looks. Metal buildings give off alot of condensation and they are always damp, unless they are insulated correctly and spray coated. Some even require a sheet plastic ceiling. They are not as strong in a big storm as a wood one, and hail storms dent them up real bad. Just my thoughts.

thank you

I thought I'd be saving money long term by going with a metal building and have more to boot - but after looking at my garage today, probably not - It looks better and will be much cheaper to remodel what I've got.

Thank you for the help
