Post and beam?

Post and beam?
I have a 4-bay carport, 40' x 20', made of six 6'x6' posts with a gabled roof. On top of the posts are beams made of two 2"x12" boards. These run all around the structure on top of the posts, which are notched and bolted to the beams. The ceiling rafters are on top of the beams. I have two questions:
1) Is this called post-and-beam construction?
2) I want to frame it in. I want to attach the studs directly to the beam using Simpson stud plate ties (SP2), without a stud plate. To have a stud plate, it seems like I would just be adding a weak link by nailing a 2x4 under the beam. Any reason I shouldn't skip the stud plate?

This is not post and beam construction, This is called pole barn construction.
This is very strong. Put your 2x4 top sill plate on and attach it to the beam.
It works just the opposite of what you think. By not putting in the top sill plate, it will make it weaker. Good Luck
