building 25x30' garage need to know about support beam

building a 25x30' garage with a 7/12 roof pitch do I need support columns or will column ties work. In connecticut

7/12 framing answer

First, I think you are refering to collar ties not column ties. I would always use collar ties. Also, tie your 2 long walls together with ceiling joists and then use stub columns to tie your vertical load from you rafters to the joists. It may seem like over kill, but it adds great strength to the system.
If you can, go to the library and just look at books for basic roof framing.
Second, I would have spent 24.95 and got a set of prints to follow for everything. The little extra money prints cost can save you trouble down the road.

Are you framing with roof trusses or traditional rafters? That would make a difference on how the load is supported.

I'm assuming rafters since you mentioned collar ties. If you expect a snow load simply transfering the roof loads to ceiling joists probably isn't sufficient. Actually it might not be sufficient in any case. A 25' span is a long reach for joists without any support.
