Garage door sensor light intermittent.

I am having intermittent problems with a Craftsman garage door installed in '95. Just started having issues last month. This door opener has the safety beam (but the transmitter and the receiver are mounted lens to lens and taped together with black electrical tape). Not my doing but it works for our extra garage. I notice that when the garage door operates correctly, each safety beam part has a green light. When the door doesn't want to close, only one green light is lit.
Since the transmitter & receiver are taped together and I am assuming have been working this way since '95, where should I look for the trouble? Is this typical of a beam problem or some computer board on the opener?

Thanks for any ideas!

check for a bad connection where the wires plug into the eye sensor. The old design plugged in and the wires corrode or the pins brake off, may be time for a new set.
