Hello, I'm scouting out prices for building material to get my garage built. I'm a Linux system administrator by day, and an electronic enthusiast by night. So when I see well over 10 varieties of lumbar to choose from, I begin to get overwhelming researching them and figuring what I actually want. In no particular order of importance: 1. Do I need "treated" wood for my framing? 2. Does stronger translate to "more durable and long lasting"? 3. Should I even consider TREX as a framing option? 4. Is there a common "standard" type that people use for framing? 5. By framing in the above questions I mean my studs that are 16" apart. Do I get the same studs for my ceiling, wall caps and fire breaks? 6. If it's allowed on the forum, can anyone point me to some places that sell trusses. I have no idea the cost of these things and would like to see the variations in cost and type along with size. And finally 7. Any, truly any, advise beside "get someone to do it for you" would be much appreciated. So far I have a few books and magazines as well as my dad (a concrete worker/supervisor for about 29 years) and that's about it for my advise so far. My goal: Build a garage to enclose 2 cars, a motorcyle and a 3rd car in the rear (a project car or long term repair). Something like 2 and half car wide, and 2 car deep, and if I remember my measurements correctly it put me at 36' w x 32' deep. I'm also hoping to have room for a small "shop" area for things like a drill press, some basic wood working tools, a decent bench, etc. As well as store my yard care items such as the lawn mower.
