Garage door won't open more than a couple inches

Question Garage door won't open more than a couple inches

I've got a Sears Craftsmen garage door. It was working fine and then all of a sudden it would only open about two inches. I adjusted the tension to the highest setting hoping this would pull the garage door up, but it didn't. I put it in manual and tried to pull the garage door up, but it couldn't be pulled up more than about two inches. I checked the rails on the side and there are no obstructions at all. What could it be?

check your garage door for a broken spring or it may have gotten accidentally locked.

Where are the springs? On the rails? At the control unit?

If you released the opener from the door, and physically could not lift the door more than a few inches, it definitely sounds like a spring. Look above the door and, if you see a heavy metal rod with a spring wound around it, that is a torsion spring and it has either slipped, or more likely broken. Call a garage door specialist as this is not a DIY project.
