A garage door damage control idea

Why not encapsulate the big long coil springs in a metal or a strong plastic(ABS ??). When the springs breaks, its then contained..
Also, the spring should be oiled , I have seen too much rust on springs.
The better automobiles coat their springs with a protective layer of a strong "paint". I'm still looking for the correct lubricants for the 4 garage doors...
An openers life of 7 years is poor, it should be twice that, with the proper care and feeding..

All new doors come with safety cables that are run through extension springs (or you can by them for older doors), torsion springs just unwind around the torque tube, I've never heard of one of those flying off.

The maintenance section of door manuals usually states to run a light bead of oil on torsion springs during maintenance and lubricate pivot points on extension type.

The problem is people never want to do maintenance on the largest heaviest moving item in their home.

All that I have had and do have now is old...
Most if not all previous garage doors used two coil springs.. I've never seen the torsion bar...used for a door.
And I've never seen any "instructions", these seem to become lost so easily.
So, this month, I'll continue with the lubrication.
Thanks for the response.

Earthworm - Not a torsion bar but a torsion spring. They mount horizontally on the door header and are wound (torsion) rather than extended. IMO a better design.
