garage door opener won't open or close

Unhappy

I replaced the gears in my Sears door opener and now the garage door will open about 12 inches, then reverse back (close) 12 inches. The garage door is balanced. It can easily be closed and opened by hand. I've tried adjusting the up and down tension to the highest (that didn't work). I've checked the up and down limit, it doesn't touch either limit. I've taken the gears back out and tried running the motor without the new gears that I had put in, and I still get the same results.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am probably not going to be able to help you, but maybe my answer will help others who read this. I always say and have always contended and stand by it, that a garage door opener is dispensible item. If they don't work throw them out and get a new one. They are cheap and easy to install, and will save hours and sometimes days of tinkering. A garage door opener is made for one thing. To open or close your door. If they do not work, get one that does. Garage doors are only made to last 5 to 7 years. If you get more years out of one your lucky. Even when I get called to fix an opener, I install a new one. It is not cost effective to fix them. My guess is that one or both of your circuit boards are gone.
