another garage door opener question

Our garage door opener is jamming. The opener activates when the button is pressed, you can hear it attempt to lower, then raise the door, then quit. Nothing moves. I've found that I can free it up by moving the gears with my hands, which allows it to operate for a short distance before jamming again. I replaced the shaft bearing (which had gone) but this didn't resolve the problem. The problem occurs even when the door is disconnected from the slide so I figure that rules the door out. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Buy a new opener. They are only good for about 5 years to 7 years. Anything longer is just gravey.
