Attaching carport to garage
I want to attach a small carport to the side of my garage which is covered in sheets of Hardi board. I understand you usually cut away siding to install a ledger. However, since my garage has 12' sidewalls there is a flashed horizontal joint in the siding. My question: If I put the roof of the carport just below the existing flashing, would it be OK to slide some new flashing under the existing for the ledger? My concern is it only hangs down over the lower siding by about 1/4 inch. Thanks.

Is there an overhang on the garage roof? Can you build it free standing & forget about a ledger? The water from the garage roof can drain to the carport roof or you can install a gutter & downspouts on that side of the garage.

It's on the gable side of the garage so there is about a foot overhang above. The carport won't be very wide, only about 6 feet. It's going to be more of a "mowerport" and "firewoodport". Would it be OK just setting some posts against the wall and attaching them to the wall for some support? I will put a gutter on the port.
