Problem with garage door opener.

I have an old genie 'lift a door' garage opener. It was working fine until I tried to program my car's remote to allow it to open the door: then things started to go wrong. Not only will my car remote not work, but when I try to open the garage door with the wall operator or the original remote it won't open fully, and when I try to close it, it closes about three feet from the ground. I tried to reset the unit by unplugging it but that hasn't worked. Has anyone any ideas what is going wrong?? Would really appreciate your help...

You say it worked fine before you tried to program remote. That should not have affected the mechanical operation. Are you sure the door is properly balanced and in good working order without the use of the opener?

Disconnect the opener and lift the door about half way. First it should easily lift with just one hand and not much effort. Second it should stay in the center position without falling or rising. If not adjustment is needed.

Without the door attached, does the opener work by remote or wall switch?

As far as it not going down all the way, did you monkey with the stops and travel adjustments? Could it be coincidence that the unit is going bad and you just happened to try converting over to a new remote?

Thanks for your reply. I tried everything you said but it was still playing up so I unplugged it overnight and now it seems to be OK.
