Smoke from garage door openner

I have a Overhead Door Phantom and Legacy chain garage door opener which is about 10 year old. Today, I might have opened/closed the garage door too many times and caused overheat, big smoke came out from the garage door opener. I thought the capacitor was burned out, but somehow, after it cools down, everything still works fine. It seems to me it is not the capacitor, otherwise, it would not work anymore. I am wondering what was burned and if there is any potential safety issue if I don't do anything even though it works ok at this time. Thanks a lot in advance.

Welcome to the forums.

It was most likely the motor smoking. Garage door openers aren't designed for continuous duty.
If it's still working... it should be ok.
