Garage door opener malfunction

I have a Lift Master one half horsepower opener installed in the late nineties.

When I try to operate it the chain just "hops" a little and makes a few "click" noises. I have pulled the cord to disconnect the door from the opener and can operate the door (16' by 8") by hand easily.

I have turned the up and down adjustments on the side of the unit by turning each a half turn both plus and minus. There are downforce adjustments accessible when the rear light cover is removed. I have not changed either of these.

The problem is both with the remote and wall button? Sounds like a faulty relay.

I would unplug the unit.... remove the cover.... and do a visible inspection of the opener.
If it's an older unit it may need a replacement gear kit.

ExtraParts again:

The problem exists with both door buttons and the remote. I removed the cover and the gears appear to be serviceable.

When the button is pressed, the large gear turns a fraction of one cog. Additional presses advance the gear. Perhaps one hundred presses would rotate the gear one half turn. There is also an odd shaped "wheel" that momentarily spins. It looks like an interrupter for a revolution counter.

Is this consistent with a bad relay?

Not really sure. But replacing just the relay isn't worth it unless you can in fact pin point that as the actual problem. Replacing the whole receiver circuit board is a better bet. Cost wise might not be worth it compared to a new opener. But you might check e-Bay for just the board.

Can you turn the unit by hand at least one full revolution? This will show if all the gears are meshing and are in good shape. As PJ said, be sure the mechanical items are up to snuff before investing in the electronics.

If you press and hold down the wall switch, will the door operate as long as you hold the button down?

Do you have a model number?

When you pulled the cover down..... were there a lot of white shavings inside the unit ?

Well, it's probably just me, but I'd be looking at the capacitor.
