Garage door opener hums but doesn't open
It doesn't appear to be jammed. I looked at fixing that since it seems to be the most common reason, but I can't even find the pieces mentioned. I can't figure out what might be wrong.

Adding the make and model will help.
How can it not "appear to to be jammed"?
Did you pull the rope and release the door from the track and try to lift it?
Does the door open with one hand and stop in any position without dropping when you let it go?
Pulled the cover off the motor to see if the plastic gear is stripped?

It's a Genie 3060L. Sorry. I tried to put a picture up using my phone, but apparently the forum doesn't support that on the phone.
What I mean by it doesn't appear to be jammed is that most of the sulutions I've found show a completely different looking track with a chain that gets jammed on a nut. Mine is a screw drive, and nothing is jammed.
I pulled the rope from the track and put the door down that way for now. It was open when it stopped working.
Yes, I can open the door and it will stop without dropping.

Welcome to the forums.
Pictures from most cell phones are way to big to post here. http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...-pictures.html

Possible stripped carrier for the screw drive. Had to replace mine couple of years ago. This part:

Genie screw drives have a plastic coupling between the motor and the screw. These do wear out and could be the cause of your problem. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.
