Mixing old and newer Craftsman garage door opener remotes

We have two garage door openers. One is original circa 2001, has red learn button on the opener unit. A few years ago on new years day 2013 I replaced the other new opener (purple learn button).

I would like to use only the newer remotes to control both old&new openers but have not been able to make this work. Anyone know if it is even possible? The guy at local Sears said it should work (new remotes should work on both frequencies).

The old remote is not working so well lately and would rather just have the one in each vehicle.

Thanks!

The red is a 390mhz frequency while the purple is 315 mhz.

Please advise the model number of the control that Sears sold you.
