Builtup Beams - Sound Advice or Selling Points

I realize I may be opening a can of worms but since I fear I may overthink and over-research things I'm interested in some opinions.

First when building 10' overhead door headers on the bearing wall is 2x lumber so much inferior to LVL?

It was recommended and I have chosen 1 3/4x11 7/8 LVL which I think might be overkill but now I am pondering what fasteners to use. Some people have suggested a whole wack of 3 1/2 nails from either side is good and throw in a bit of glue for good measure. If I read the manufacturers info I should be using Flat-lok or Truss-Lok screws but have no idea which is better.

Flat-Lok screws sound good and install flush but the thread hits into both beams. One of the features of the Truss-Lok is that the thread is only in the last beam and serves to pull the beams together better. This sound good to me but is it really better?

I'm sure there are builders out there with different opinions and arguments. I'm interested in hearing as much info as comes my way. Thanks
