What kind of insulation needed

I have recently purchased a new home. When checking out the attic, I noticed that the area above the outside porch is not insulated. I'm thinking of putting in insulation, but want some professional input.

As you can see, there is nothing between the outside covering (vinyl siding material) and the studs. I'm considering putting in unfaced insulation below the joists (at a 90 degree angle, as there appears to be a space there) and another layer between the joists. Lastly, I'd add a moisture/vapor barrier across the top of the joists.
Does this sound about right?

You only insulate conditioned areas so adding insulation above the porch will do nothing for you except empty your wallet!

An interesting point. The fact that this is open to the rest of the attic concerned me. Air seems to run through and I'd thought this may need attention to keep the rest of the house insulated. But I guess you're right. If it was needed, I expect that it would have been done when the house was built.

Thanks!

I agree with Marq1... also, it looks like anyone with a ladder could break into your house pretty easily. Amazing they didn't sheath that soffit with osb before they put the soffit up.

I spose one of my future projects would be to take down the outsides and sheath it properly.

That is no different than my covered front porch.

I haven't lost a nights sleep worrying about somebody going up into my attic and then into the house.
