Adding on to existing shop

Not sure if this is in the right place.

We have a 24x24 shop . I need to extend it by 10' so our boat will fit in the shop.

i got to thinking . What if I added a 2nd story to the new 10x24 section? Make it a home office or hobby room.

Am I crazy to consider something like that?

Is it a major increase to cost over materials cost?

An extra 240 square feet of usable space... 240 sq feet of floor joists, subfloor, 68 lineal feet of 2nd story walls, 300+ sq ft of a roof independent of the existing roof, with its own gutters, downspouts, windows, heating / air conditioning, insulation, finish flooring, staircase and railing (assuming your 10x24 addition is large enough to accomodate the 3' wide staircase that is 10-12' long)... you might need to go 12x24 or 14x24 so that you still have adequate room for the boat.

Yeah its going to cost a lot more. Maybe over twice as much. If you calculate the total floor space, you could probably figure $75 per sq ft on average.

Is it crazy? No, not if that's what you want / need.

Maybe not such a good idea. I thought maybe it would be a fraction since I am already paying for walls, joists, concrete, etc. Of course adding floors, walls, siding, electrica .

Had planned on putting stairs on the outsid .

If you just want a little space above the garage, you could maybe get 12:12 storage trusses for the roof that are 24' long... it would create a small attic space down the middle maybe 10x10 without a lot of added expense. You could still have the stairs outside.

When we do that addition, it probably would be worth it to explore those trusses. We need to add the 10' on the back to fit the boat. I need to think through this addition plus what the future holds. Someday, a larger shop is in order. Haven't decided if it will be next to the current shop or down the property.
