Winding garage door for an 8' door

We had one of our 40" torsion spring break on our garage door in our new house. I was able to determine what size spring had been used there and to purchase a new one. We have an 8' by 19' for that is quite heavy. I was not able to lift the door at all when there was no tension in the springs. I initially would each of the new springs 30 quarter turns as was suggested in numbers articles and videos. The door still did not move at this amount. I tried a few more turns and didn't have much success. I did a little bit more research and found someone saying that 8' does required and additional four quarter turns more to account for the additional for height. I ended up adding 2 more quarter turns and now the garage door is working. It does make some creaking noise for the first 6"if lift which disturbs me some. Is this normal? Is there a way to verify that these springs are appropriate for this size/weight of door? I'm not 100% sure the previous installer used the correct size springs.

Welcome to the forums.

There are very few DIY projects I shy away from but one of them is torsion springs on a garage door. That is a specialized job and I leave it up to those pros.

If you know what springs you got..... you should be able to look up their specs.
It will be tough to weigh the door itself.

I'm not sure if there is a way for us to help you here.
What you really need is some "hands on" help to look the installation over.
