Cost of building my own RV carport?

I have a quote for $2950 for a 14' high metal carport for my RV. My roommate, who is handy and very enthusiastic about DIY, thinks he can do one for $1000. Is he being realistic? He intends to buy pipes, corners, connectors, anchors and roofing at the hardware store. Has anyone done this? Any advice much appreciated.

Add up the cost of materials and see what you get. I don't think pipe & connectors will be as strong as a square tube framed pre-fab carport but it all depends on exactly what materials your friend plans to use and how.
