Garage Door Balance Torsion Spring Condition
My garage torsion springs have been more than 10 years. I open/close 6x daily for the first 5 years. Since the pandemic, I only open/close it 6x a week, instead of daily.
Today, I was checking if my torsion springs are still in good condition or is it time for replacement. I did the "half door hang" check by unlatching the lock from the garage lift and leave the door half way from the ground to check the balance. Leaving it half way, it wants to go up very strongly. It only hangs when I leave it 1/4 from the ground, instead of 1/2.

- Does this mean the springs are still good?
- Does this mean I should have someone balance it so that it is at the half way mark? Right now, the springs seems to be winded tight for the reason why the garage door wants to go up at the half way mark.

It's almost impossible to predict when a spring will fail. So are they too old? Not necessarily. But I agree having them rebalnced so the door will maintain at mid way opening would be good.
Perhaps DOORMAN, might chime in and give his opinion.

Normal residential garage door springs are good for 10,000 cycles, they do get weaker as they age. The average door spring/ springs usually last 7-10 years.

I believe they are two galvanize torsion springs since they are metal looking. Does galvanize last longer?
I believe when I bought these, they said the cycle is up to 50K or is that a bunch of BS?
They still have a strong pull at the half way point. Is this an indication of anything? Either way, should I just have them replaced?
Do you have a recommendation where to buy good quality springs and how to size it for my garage? I want to make attempt to change them myself and yes, I know the risks, including standing in front of the winding bars.

Clopay used galvanized as a stock spring, they always seemed to break earlier then your standard spring, there is no way to tell haw many cycles your springs are capable of without the actual wire size. there are several video's on how to measure your garage door springs.... They are dangerous and I recommend you call a pro, much cheaper than a visit to the ER.
