how to repair gash on shed metal roof

A branch came down on the metal roof of my 8'x10' shed and made a 24" long jagged gash that varies in width from 1/2" to almost 2". Because of a possible light rain next week, I'm going to try a temporary repair with some 2" wide foil duct tape but the gash is too wide for the tape to make a solid repair.

Has anyone found a way to make a solid repair on a metal (fairly thin metal) shed roof?

While replacement of the affected panel is best you could fasten a strip of metal over the tear. I'd caulk under it and tar over the patch piece.

I use a scrap of sheet metal. I clean around the area to be repaired and make sure it's flat. Then I paint the perimeter of the hole with roofing tar and stick the sheet metal in place. Then some sheet metal screws or pop rivets to help hold it in place.
